Thomas BARBER

BIOGRAPHY:

Thomas Barbour or Barber, the immigrant ancestor, came to New England in the ship, "Christian," March 16, 1634.  He settled in Windsor, Connecticut, in 1635, at the age of twenty-one, with the Saltonstall party, under Francis Stiles. He was a soldier in the Pequot fight.  He married, October 7, 1640, Jane -, who died September 10, 1662.  He died September 11, 1662.

(II) Lieutenant Thomas (2) Barber , son of Thomas (1) and Jane Barber , was born July 14, 1644 , died May 10, 1713.  He removed to Simsbury , and was a carpenter by trade, building the first meeting house there.  He married, December 17, 1663, Mary, who died in 1687, daughter of William and Mary (Dover) Phelps, the immigrants.  Children: John, born November 1, 1664, married Mary Holcomb ; Mary, born January 11, 1666; Sarah, born July 12, 1669, married Andrew Robe; Joanna, born 1670, married (first) Josiah Adkins, (second) Benjamin Colt; Thomas, born October 7, 1671, married Abigail Buell; Samuel, see forward; Ann, married Jonathan Higley.


Jonathan GILLET

BIOGRAPHY: Jonathan Gillet, immigrant ancestor, was, with his brother Nathan, of the company of one hundred and forty Puritan from the counties of Deon, Dorset, and Somerset, England, which sailed with Rev. John Warham and Rev. John Maverick as pastors in the ship "Mary and John," March 20, 1630, arriving of Nantasket May 30.  He was one of the settlers of Dorchester, Massachusetts, and was admitted a freeman of the colony May 6, 1635.  The next year he and his brother Nathan removed with Rev. John Warham and the Dorchester pioneers to Windsor, Connecticut, and participated in the settlement of that place.  He had a lot seventeen rods wide near the lot of John Warren, and opposite that of Alexander Alvord.  Johnathan Gillet and his wife Mary are included in the list of church members made by Mathew Grant thirty-seven years after the settlement of twenty-one "members who were so in Dorchester and came up with Mr. Warham and are still of us."  They were also privileged, having paid six shillings so sit in the long seats in the church.  Jonathan Bent gave four shillings, sixpence, to the fund in aid of the sufferer by the Indian raids at Simsbury and Springfield, and he was one of the committee of distribution.  He died August 23, 1677, and his widow, Mary, died January 5, 1685.
