In the Name of God, Amen, I, Samuel D. Phillips of Mooers N.Y. being of sound mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this life, do therefore make, ordain, publish and declare, this to be my last will and testament. That is to say, First, after all my lawful debts are paid and discharged, I give and bequeath to my grand child Madge E. Hodlin the looking glass and old clock that were bought by her grand mother. To my grand son Elevin Phillips all my law books. To my wife the use of all my personal property during her life time (and of my real estate if she so elects). To my children Emma J. and Pliny F. Phillips in consideration of thier taking care of their mother during her lifetime and giving her a suitable burial, I give and bequeath all my real estate and personal property of which I may ??? possessed. It is my wish that the real estate be kept intact during my wife's lifetime.
Likewise, I make, Constitute and appoint George E. Phillips to be Executor of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former will by me made.

Samuel D. Phillips
Samuel D. Phillips was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1809, and died at his home in Mooers, N.Y., Tuesday, February 4th, 1896.
When a mere boy his parents removed from Glasgow to Kilmarnock, some twenty miles distant, his father, mother, and sister going by stage. George, an elder brother, drove the team with the household goods, while Samuel, William and James traveled the distance on foot, carrying a basket containing the pet cat and kittens.
At an early age he was apprenticed to learn the shoemaker's trade at Kilmarnock. At the age of nineteen he became enthused with the military, and enlisted in the British Army, serving 15 years and 5 months, in the Queen's service. In 1844, he was stationed at Laprarie, P.Q., from there he deserted the army and came to the United States by way of Champlain, N.Y., and from there he went to Isle La Motte, Vt.
June 10th, 1847, he was married by the Rev. Townsend, to Miss Lucy Hulbert and removed to Westport, N.Y., and a little later removed to Plattsburgh, N.Y., and in 1849, came to Mooers. His wife died in 1850. By the marriage there were two children, James and Susannah Katherine. Susannah K. married S.D. Hodlin and died Feb 15th, 1895, aged 40 years. In 1851 he married Miss Emily Richardson, who survives him. By this marriage there was seven children, George E, William, Lucy Parmella, Deane E., Emma J., Samuel D., and Pliny A., all of whom survive him, except Lucy Parmella who died July 11th, '62 aged 8 years and 8 months.
For a short time he worked at his trade of shoemaking, at Mooers, after which he served 13 years and 5 months as a trusted keeper at Dannemora state prison. Returning to Mooers he was elected overseer of the poor, holding that position for several years, and afterward was elected and re-elected to the office of justice of the peace, in each of these places of trust proving a faithful official.
In politics he was a staunch believer in the principles of the Republican party.
August 1st, 1887, he received pardon, through the clemency of the Queen, for desertion from the British Army.
By his genial, kind and sympathetic disposition, he won the admiration of all with whom he came in contact. In sickness he was an excellent nurse, in trouble of whatever nature, he was always ready to respond and render assistance.
He was frank and ingenuous in his opinions, full of enthusiasm in any undertaking. He always wore a smile, and his genial Scotch nature served him many a good turn.
For fifty years he was a faithful servant of God, a strong believer in the principles of right and truth. He was a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal church, bearing the burdens in the interest of the Master and the church of his choice, holding the office of steward and trustee.
After a long and useful career his strength and nature yielded to infirmities and for several years his illness was severe and tedious to bear. His last testimony for the Master was rich and full of love.
The funeral was held from the M.E. church, Friday afternoon, Feb 7th, the pastor, Rev. J. G. Gooding, officiating, preaching from the text Psalm 23:4. A very large number of friends gathered to pay this last tribute of respect.

Samuel D. Phillips 1 1/2 miles east of Moores Village age 87. Mr. Phillips came over the "picket line" about 50 years ago as a deserter from the British Army. Spent a short time in Vermont, was keeper in Dannemora prison a few years, then settled in Moores. Justice of the Peace and Overseer of the Poor. Dalton Man Dies Suddenly At G.E. Plant
Pliny A. Phillips Had Been Sufferer from Heart Trouble for Some Time
Pliny A. Phillips, aged 52, of Dalton, died suddently at the General Electric plant this morning about 9 o'clock, death being due to heart trouble with which he had suffered for some time, althou this morning he appeared to feel in unusually good health until stricken.
He was taken ill about 8:30 and was removed to the emergency room of the plant where he was attended by D.r R. A. Woodruff, who had been treating him for the malady off and on for some time and Dr. C.H. Richardson of Hillcrest Hospital. They could do nothing for him, however. The medical examiner was not called, as owing to the fact that Mr. Phillips had been suffering from heart trouble and was attended by a physician when he died, that official's services were not needed. The body was removed to W. N. Jones' undertaking rooms to be prepared for burial.
Mr. Phillips was born in Moore's N.Y, and had live in Dalton for about a year and a half, boarding with his niece and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ringie. Previously for a time he had boarded in this city. He was employed as a shear cutter in the puch press department at the General Electric plant. he was a member of the Dalton Methodist church. He came to this city from Middletown, Conn., where he was a foreman in an industrial school.
Mr. Phillips has two brothers and a sister, all of who are now in Denver, Col., on a visit. They are George of Ansonia, Conn., William of Denver, Col., and Miss Emma Phillips of Middletown, Conn. They have been notified and the funeral arrangements will not be made until word has been heard from them.

OBITUARY:
SWANTON - Mr. Richard V. Gadue, 74, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2010 in the Northwestern Medical Center.
He was born June 10, 1936, son of the late George "Raymond" and Gertrude (Lawyea) Gadue, in St. Albans.
He served his country in the U.S. Air Force, and later in the Civil Air Patrol. He was an inspector of quality control for Union Carbide Consumer Products. He was an avid photographer and after his retirement, he manufactured souvenir products, using his scenic photography. He enjoyed being a Amateur Radio Operator under the callsign KB1MAF. He was a communicant of The Nativity Parish.
He is survived by his son, James Gadue and his wife Donna of Rouses Point; a brother, Raymond Gadue and his wife Eileen of Swanton; two grand- daughters, Arrien and Eva Gadue; stepgrandchildren, Zachary and Skyler Smith; several nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Judy Gadue of Swanton. He was predeceased by his parents; his son, Michael Gadue; and a special friend Jane Machia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the Church of The Nativity in Swanton.
Interment will follow in Gadue lot in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., from 6 to 8 Tuesday evening.
