OBITUARY:
Herald Coaster, January 27, 2004:
Longtime Richmond attorney and civic leader Paul Clarence Scherer died Jan. 26, 2004, after battling cancer for several months. He was 77.
Scherer, who specialized in probate law, practiced at the same office in Richmond for 54 years. He also owned and managed Peareson-Fort Bend Abstract Company and its successor, Fort Bend Title Company. During his lifetime, Scherer served as the City Attorney of Richmond for 35 years and was elected to the Lamar Consolidated School District school board for over two decades.
Since 1950, he held active memberships in the Richmond Rotary Club and St. John's United Methodist Church, where he also served on the Board of Trustees and various committees over many years.
He also was a life member and supporter of the Fort Bend and Houston 100 Clubs, which provide assistance to police officers and their widows and children. He held a lifetime membership in the University of Texas Ex-Students Association and served as President of the Fort Bend County Ex-Students Association.
Scherer also served on the boards of the Fort Bend County Library and the Fort Bend County Bar Association. He was a member of the American Bar Association and Texas Land Title Association, where he served as regional vice-president.
In an interview shortly before his death, Scherer said he strongly believed in the importance of education and giving back to a community that had given so much to him and his family. "I've been so fortunate here and people have been so good to me," Scherer said. "It was such a nice, clean, wholesome town to live in. I should give something back to the community. I felt very strongly about that because of my feelings toward Richmond and Fort Bend County." A guiding principle in his life, he said, was The Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you."
Paul C. Scherer was born in Evansville, Ind. on March 5, 1926. When he was 13, his parents, Paul C. and Mildred Rowe Scherer, moved the family to Rosenberg. His father, who managed a feed store in Indiana, was employed by Duval Sulphur in Orchard. His mother was a homemaker.
His interest in business came early in life, according to his sister, Jean Sypert. As a child, he set up a cardboard storefront in the yard and "bought three pieces of candy for a dime and sold them for a nickel each." From then on, the family knew Scherer would become a skillful businessman, she said.
Scherer graduated from Rosenberg High School and then attended his beloved University of Texas at Austin, obtaining degrees in business and law, interrupted by a two-year stint in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He met his future wife at the First United Methodist Church in Rosenberg while visiting his parents during his final year in law school. He and Leta LaNoe Fenner of Edna, were married July 28, 1949 - just six months after he was licensed to practice law.
Veteran Richmond Judge D.R. Peareson and P.E. Peareson quickly invited the promising young lawyer/businessman to join their firm. There, he worked with many prominent businessmen in Fort Bend County and became one of the organizers and founding directors of Gulf Coast Savings and Loan Association and served as a director of Sugar Land State Bank for many years.
Scherer liked to tell people the only certain things in life were "death and taxes," and he tried through his work to help people at least minimize the taxes. He was highly regarded as a lawyer, known for being inquisitive, meticulous and thorough in his research on behalf of clients.
He was a member of Phi Delta Phi, an honorary fraternity in law school, and was honored to be a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, an invitation-only professional organization.
His hobbies included water skiing and watching any University of Texas sports teams. In his later years, he enjoyed spending time at Lake McQueeney and taking his family on vacation trips to Alaska, Colorado, and Mexico. He frequently traveled to Austin - often flown by his grandson Justin Scherer, to watch two of his granddaughters, Sara and Jennifer Flieller, play soccer and other sports, prompting Sara to once write in a school paper declaring him "My Biggest Soccer Fan." Both of his older grandchildren, Justin and Julie Scherer, followed in his footsteps by attending the University of Texas at Austin.
He cut back on his work in 2003 to spend more time with his grandchildren. "I've asked people. Is everybody as crazy about their grandchildren as we are?" Scherer asked a friend weeks before his death.
Paul Scherer is survived by his wife LaNoe; his sister Jean Sypert, of Houston; children C. Michael Scherer and wife Judy, of Richmond; Leta Nell Scherer of Killeen; Jane Flieller and husband James, of Austin; grandchildren Justin Scherer; Julie Scherer; Sara Flieller; and Jennifer Flieller; and special family friends, Dr. and Mrs. R.C. Kirkpatrick of Sugar Land and Lake Junaluska, N.C.; and Olive Talley of Dallas.
The family extends special thanks to Dr. Ivan Mefford, home health care nurse Ben Perez; and caregivers Carmen Lopez, Lupe Rodriguez, Bonnie Wood, and the staff at Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital.
Visitation with the family will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004 at Garmany & Carden Funeral Home in Rosenberg. Following a private burial, a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 at St. John's United Methodist Church in Richmond.
For those wishing, memorial gifts may be made to the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation (LEAF), 3911 Ave. I, Rosenberg, TX 77471, or St. John's United Methodist Church, 400 Jackson St., Richmond, TX 77469.

OBITUARY:
Fort Bend Herald, April 5, 2011:
LaNoe Fenner Scherer, one of the first female members of the University of Texas Longhorn Band and a longtime Richmond resident known for her musical service to her local church and Rotary Club, died Monday, April 4, 2011, at her home. She was 85.
"I hope people remember me as a good mother, a good grandmother and a good Christian,'' she said in an interview in recent years.
Indeed, LaNoe was a devoted mother and grandmother and wife to her husband of 55 years, Paul C. Scherer, a longtime attorney, civic leader and former city attorney for Richmond who died in 2004 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 77.
LaNoe was born April 30, 1925, in the farming community of Cordele, Texas, near Victoria, the second of four children of Oscar Brehnerst and Leta Brigham Fenner. From an early age, her parents taught her the value of hard work and community service. Along the way, she developed a deep passion for music.
She began playing the piano as a young girl and continued her pursuit of music at the University of Texas, where she played trombone as one of the first women members of the famed Longhorn Band. She was an avid UT football fan throughout her life.
After graduating from the University of Texas in Austin, she defied tradition. Rather than return to her hometown, she moved to the Rosenberg-Richmond area to teach 4th grade and music. She attended First Methodist Church of Rosenberg, where she met her future husband, Paul Scherer.
They met during his final year of law school, also at the University of Texas, and they married on July 28, 1949 - six months after he was licensed to practice law.
LaNoe recalled playing the piano for Paul on their first date and said they were together from that point forward. Paul enjoyed telling the same story, but claimed she "trapped him" with her music.
LaNoe generously shared her talents with the community. As a volunteer, she played the organ and piano for 22 years at St. John's United Methodist Church in Richmond for church services, weddings and funerals. She played for weekly meetings of the Richmond Rotary Club for 27 years, and at various civic functions, nursing homes and hospitals throughout her life.
She was a longtime member of St. John's United Methodist Church, the Fort Bend Country Club, and held a lifetime membership in the UT Ex-Students' Association. Her interests included traveling with her family, reading and playing bridge.
Most of all, she dedicated her life to her family. She and Paul reared three children: Mike, Leta, and Jane, and doted on their four grandchildren, supporting them in all their academic, sporting, and other interests.
LaNoe was the rock behind Paul in his various civic ventures and his law practice as they grew deep roots in Fort Bend County for more than a half century. He maintained a law practice in the same office in Richmond for 54 years, specializing in probate law. He also owned and managed Peareson-Fort Bend Abstract Company and its successor, Fort Bend Title Company. He served for 21 years as a board member for Lamar Consolidated ISD, various banks and businesses, and Bar Associations.
LaNoe Scherer is survived by her three children: C. Michael Scherer, and his wife, Judy, of Richmond; Leta Nell Scherer, of Austin; Jane Flieller, and her husband, James, of Austin; four grandchildren: Justin Scherer and wife Emily, of Houston, Julie Scherer, of Katy, Sara Flieller and Jennifer Flieller; both of Austin; sister, Marjorie Nell Bolling, of Houston; brother, Donnie Fenner and wife, Fern, of Edna; sisters-in-law, Jean Sypert, of Houston and Edwina Fenner, of Edna; 10 nieces and nephews; and special family friend, Olive Talley, of Dallas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, O.B. Fenner, Sr. and Leta Brigham Fenner, her husband, Paul C. Scherer, and her brother, O.B. Fenner, Jr.
The family would also like to thank Bridget Pink for her long service to LaNoe.
Visitation is 5 pm to 8 pm Wednesday, April 6, at Garmany & Carden Funeral Chapel, 1201 Fourth St., Rosenberg, TX 77471. Services are set for 11 am Thursday, April 7, at St. John's United Methodist Church, 400 Jackson St, Richmond, TX 77469, after a private burial.
Memorials can be made to St. John's United Methodist Church, 400 Jackson St, Richmond, TX 77469, or to a charity of your choice.
Condolence messages may be written for the Scherer family at www.garmanycarden.com.
