Geneva Elizabeth Fark, 89, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Tuesday, May 5th, 2015, at Hearth & Home of Vandalia, Ohio, after complications from leukemia.
Born in Huntingburg on July 12, 1925, to Oscar and Amelia Feldmeyer.
Geneva had a busy childhood as a “shy farm girl,” learning the joys of helping others and raising and caring for living things from a young age. She graduated from Huntingburg High School in 1943. She married her sweetheart, Chester Fark, in 1946. After attending classes at Lockyear Business College in Evansville, she worked for the U.S. Navy Department and First National Bank of Huntingburg.
Geneva saw her husband and children through many transitions and moves throughout the country, keeping house in the States of California, Kentucky, Illinois and Ohio. She later moved her family to Tokyo, Japan, in 1966, when her husband was promoted to Vice President of General Electric Aircon.
During her nearly three years in Japan, Geneva was active with the Tokyo Union Church, volunteering and traveling extensively with its Women’s League. She also studied traditional Japanese arts such as tea ceremony and doll-making and achieved a master’s certification in Japanese flower arranging at the prestigious Ichiyo School of Ikebana under the direct tutelage of co-founder and headmaster Meikof Kasuya.
After returning to the States in 1969, Geneva spent the rest of her years in Ohio. There she won numerous awards for her floral compositions and was actively involved in several gardening organizations including the Garden Club of Dayton, which she joined after relocating to Vandalia in 1984. She was a member and a frequent volunteer at the Vandalia United Methodist Church, and helped start and run a family business, Jan’s Hallmark Shop, which served the communities of Vandalia and Richmond, Indiana for more than 25 years. During this time Geneva enjoyed yearly trips to Florida, traveling abroad, and “houseboating” with family.
Geneva credited her long-lasting good health and optimism to her close ties with family and friends. She was very proud that all of her children and grandchildren received a college education, an opportunity that she always regretted not being able to enjoy herself. Despite this, she deemed her life “a success,” having felt that her constant striving for the best and always taking advantage of learning opportunities helped shape her into a more confident, sociable, and worldly woman.
Surviving Geneva are two daughters, Janet (Michael) Cook and Nancy (Scott) Millsop, both of Vandalia; a son, Dr. Alan (Michele) Fark of Miamisburg, Ohio; two brothers, Richard Feldmeyer of Jasper and Donald (Anna Mary) Feldmeyer of Huntingburg; a brother-in-law Richard (Edna) Fark of Brownsburg; seven grandchildren, Michelle and Amy, Quinn and Molly, Kristen and Ryan and Karalyn; and nieces and nephews Gae, Michael, Beverly, Brenda and Richard.
Geneva was preceded in death by her husband Chester L. Fark, daughter-in-law Louann Fark, sister-in-law Joanne (Giltner) Feldmeyer, grandnephew Jason Feldmeyer and by Jim Erickson, her close friend and companion after Chester’s death.
Funeral services for Geneva Fark will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2015, at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg with burial to follow at Fairmount Cemetery in Huntingburg. Reverend Marie Smith will officiate at the funeral service.
Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 12 to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, the day of the funeralBURIAL:
