The Oldest Man in Greenwood Co. Suddenly Passes Away.
Asa Knowles, probably the oldest person residing in Greenwood County died suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Richard Osborn, about four miles southeast of Virgil on the early morning of July 6th 1898. He was enjoying reasonably good health, for a man of his age, being over ninety six years old.
He attended the celebration at Quincy on July 4th, seemed to enjoy the patriotic demonstrations of the younger fellow citizens.  On July 5th while attempting to cross a newly mopped floor his cane, which was supporting him, slipped and he fell causing spinal injuries which resulted in his death.  Medical aid was immediately summoned but could not avail much, it was found that not only was his spine injured but his hip dislocated, he lingered until 2 a.m. of July 6th, for the greater of the time unconscious when death relieved him.  A large crowd of relatives and friends attended the funeral services at the home on July 6th which were conducted by Rev. A.C.F. Landsberry the remains were then interned in the Virgil cemetery.
Grandfather Knowles was held in highest esteemby all who knew him, he was a stalwart Christian. He has been a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church for sixty-four years having united at Mt. Zion, Ind. 1834, during which time he has been actively engaged in Christian service, apart of his time being employed in preaching the gospel. He never grew tired of working for Jesus and up to his last moments his words were an inspiration to those about him to live a holy life, tho many times tired and weary in body he was always patient and kind through suffering and never complained but praised God.
On March 5th of each year neighbors and friends have gathered to his home and celebrated his birthday, many happy hours were thus spent with an honored citizen and kind father. It will be with sadness that his birthday will be remembered on March 5, 1899,and yet with the comforting thought that ninety-six years of toil and suffering with the cares of life have been exchanged for blessed companionship with Jesus in that home which knows no sorrow, where he awaits the coming of his great family of children and grandchildren.
Father Knowles has been a resident of Kansas since 1868 and has endured many hardships common to the early settler but his hardships are all over now and let us profit by his Godly example and love him whom he loved and read the bible which he loved so dearly and follow its teachings.
